Birth Story

Well since I haven't been the best at calling people back (sorry)! I figured I would post my birth story so all can enjoy!

On Saturday Dec. 13 I woke up to slight contractions, nothing that made me go OH this is it, so I continued on with my day, by going to breakfast and then to run some errands and clean my house to occupy my time. I kept having contractions on and off, so Phil decided to call his mom so she could get ready to come out, since she was coming by train, and voila a couple hours later here she was!

Saturday was pretty relaxing, my contractions had stopped, so I just thought I would go later, but to find out my kiddo was not allowed to be born on Saturday since my husbands family were all born on a Sunday, so I told Ben to sit tight for just a few more hours!

I went to bed and was uncomfortable and had all the fun stuff that comes with gearing up to give birth happen (no explanation needed!). I went to L&D at around 1:30 am because I was showing all the symptoms of labor. I was checked and an hour later was sent home because my water had not broke and I was only dilated to 1 cm. Needless to say I was bummed. I was talking to Phil on the way home and said you know, I have a feeling my water wont break on its own and why wouldn't they just break it for me since I was already do yesterday! Be careful what you say!

Phil and I had just parked in our parking spot and I get out of the car and have this big gush of water down my leg. I swore it couldn't be my water because I was just at the hospital and these things just don't happen, but it wouldn't stop. I went inside and it still would not stop, and I even had to go to the bathroom, so then I knew it was indeed my water!

Back to the hospital we go at 3:30 am to hopefully deliver a baby shortly after arriving....HA! I failed to read the part in the baby book that you can labor for up to 24 hours after your water breaking! I was doing fine on the pitocin they gave me, since my water had broke and they needed to get me dilating, but then discovered I do not like pain at all and was given fentinol (SP) which took the edge off but I still felt everything. This lasted for a good while and then all of a sudden I could not take it anymore, I was not dilating and was having bad contractions so I begged for the epidural and I tell you what, it was a life saver for me, since I had not gotten any sleep to be able to finally sleep.

Fast forward to about 5:00 pm I had been checked a couple of times and still no progression past 5 cm, they continue to monitor me and the baby and the nurses were just wonderful at this point doing all they could to keep me comfortable and make sure that baby and I were safe. I didn't know how bad I was doing I was so groggy from sleeping and my epidural, that when they said I needed to have a Csec since I was not going any where and I was running a fever it didn't even phase me.

I was whisked off to the surgery room around 8pm and I remember it being a really short period of time I was in there, I didn't know they could do it so fast but I was in and out within 45 minutes.

While I was whisked off to the recovery room, I had to let the numbness in my legs subside before they would move me up to my post parturm room, so I sat and I tried my hardest to get my legs to move and before long they were moving (mind over matter) is what my mantra was during this time. I would not be defeated by a surgery and would be up in no time!

Long story short my little guy ended up with a little infection and had to stay in the nicu for a couple of days, with me going down to see him and feed him every few hours and was delighted when they finally let him come to my room, so we were able to bond a day in the hospital before going home.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the hospital, it was a great place with very knowledgeable staff and nurses who really went above and beyond what was asked of them! I am sure I will be delivering at the same place if we decide to add to the Wagner clan, but as of now I am enjoying being a mother to my son and couldn't imagine a cuter kid!

I hope this helps explain what happened and I apologize to not getting back to people via phone, I am just on mom mode right now, and don't really get around to my phone too much!

Benjamin Chase Wagner

December 14th 2008 at 8:22 PM.

7lbs 11 oz
21 inches

So, Melissa's water broke around 3 am (Funny story actually but I will let her tell it another time). So after about 17 hours and her being only about 5 cm dilated and the head only moving down so much, the docs decided to make it a C-Section.

Everything is perfect, the only downside was that Ben caught a bit of a fever from being exposed for too long in the womb after the sac had punctured and so he is in the NICU receiving antibiotics and observation.

Lest you worry though, he is alert and smiling already. He can grab onto my (Phil) finger very strongly and he will be breastfeeding later this morning.

Hooray! We are parents (finally)! More pictures and stories to follow as Melissa (mommy) recovers.

My Hero

Wow, what can I say. Melissa you rock. Seriously, watching her go through this, it is incredible how much women endure to deliver. I know you are all hoping for stats, well she is resting now and happy as can be. It will probably be a few more hours though, but we will see...

My Husband Rocks Friday

This weeks theme talks about Christmas, here is the prompt:

Tell us about the first Christmas you spent together, dating, engaged, or married. Or share your favorite Christmas memory with your spouse.

Well lets see, the first Christmas Phil and I spent together was an interesting one! I met Phil Dec. 15, 2003, while he was still stationed down in San Diego with the Navy, since we had just met we didn't really celebrate Christmas together that year.

Fast forward one year, Phil and I are married and living in Colorado! We didn't waste any time! So since Christmas was a big deal for both of us, we decided to fly down for the holiday's since I could get us free flights (flight attending!).

This Christmas was too be an ODD one for us! Phil and I celebrated with my family on Christmas morning, and were then to go to my Aunts house for Christmas dinner and family time, well we get there and no sooner than being there for an hour, Phil's father who he was not close to at the time calls and gives us a HUGE guilt trip for not being with his side of the family, so reluctantly I go with Phil, but as I have never been away from my family on Christmas lots of tears were shed!

I can't imagine another first Christmas like that! Basically I spent the day by myself since that side of the family is not really into being "together" it is just mandatory that they get together because of tradition! (thank you Phil for no longer making me have to go through that again, I am glad I was able to show you what it means to be happy on Christmas, and to not be about the gifts!) To top off our first Christmas together, my grandmother died the next day, but having Phil by my side made it a lot easier to take!

I am not sure where this post is supposed to go, but that first Christmas will forever remained etched in my mind, good or bad it is a part of growing as a couple and learning what makes each other and each others families unique!

Now on to my Favorite Christmas memory with my Husband! I would have to say it was the first year we met, and right after Christmas I came down to San Diego to celebrate with other relatives, I drove separately since I had to work that day, and on the way down I made a special stop over at a hotel parking lot so I could give Phil a Birthday cake I had made for him, since his Birthday is two days after Christmas. I made him the most richest cake he had ever eaten, he still talks about it to this day, how he lived off of it for a week!

I am no longer able or supposed to make him Birthday cakes, since he insists on making his special cake that his Grandmother used to make for him and gave him the recipe too, but I just love the fact that I was able to put a smile on my sailors face!

I love my husband and am excited that this year our little family of two will become a family of three with the addition of our son, who will hopefully be here by this week!

My Husband Rocks Friday

Ok party people, it is Friday again, which means.....drum roll please! MY HUSBAND ROCKS!

I don't have one specific thing my husband did "good" or went out of his way for, so basically my Husband just rocks all around! I wouldn't be married to him if he didn't rock!

So Phil, it doesn't take doing incredible things to make me think you ROCK, You just Do :)

Love you!
